Spice up your couscous: 7 ways to add excitement to your grain game

A staple in many cuisines around the world, couscous is delicious on its own, but adding a little extra something can take your dishes to the next level.

From incorporating more vibrant flavours to experimenting with unique textures, there are so many ways to take your couscous dishes into culinary masterpieces. Here are some ideas.

1. Throw in some herbs and spices

Enhance the flavour profile of your couscous by infusing it with aromatic herbs and spices. Add some cumin, paprika or turmeric (or create a spice mix that you love) to the cooking water for a subtle warmth and depth. Alternatively, toss the cooked couscous with fresh herbs like mint, parsley or coriander for a burst of freshness. These herbs and spices can completely change the character of your dish, turning a simple couscous into an exotic delight.

2. Go nuts! (And fruits)

Ever thought about adding some dried fruit to your couscous? Raisins, dried apricots or cranberries (or a cubed dried fruit mix you can find at the supermarket) add a delightful touch of sweetness. Another great idea is adding some toasted almond flakes, a few pistachios or crushed cashew nuts for some nice crunchiness. Add both to create a sweet-savoury-crunchy delight that will intrigue your family and friends!

3. Get that five-a-day with veggies

This is an interesting and truly great way to add colour, texture and nutrition to your couscous. Roasted vegetables like bell peppers zucchini and eggplant are delicious when added to this versatile grain and lend a smoky sweetness (especially if you add a little paprika). Sautéed mushrooms or caramelised onions give a delicious savoury depth. Go ahead and try some steamed broccoli, carrots or peas for a vibrant and wholesome couscous experience. Don’t be afraid to mix and match to discover your favourite flavour combinations.

Add a zing to your couscous by incorporating citrus zest. Grate the zest of a lemon, lime or orange into the cooking water or sprinkle it over the cooked couscous. The bright, tangy notes will elevate the flavours and bring a refreshing twist to your dish. You can also add some extra herbs here to create another layer of freshness. Pair this citrus-infused couscous with grilled fish or roasted chicken for a delectable combination.

5. Get saucy…

Experiment with creamy sauces like tahini or yoghurt, or make a sauce with avocado, which adds richness and depth to the grains. For a tangy twist, drizzle some homemade vinaigrette or a squeeze of lemon juice over your couscous. A well-crafted sauce can transform a simple couscous dish into a gastronomic delight, creating a delightful contrast and enhancing the overall taste experience.

6. Add some protein

If you’re on a plant-based diet, add chickpeas, lentils or beans to your couscous for a filling, protein-rich option. Grilled chicken, shrimp or tofu can also be diced and mixed in. These options add more substance and create a meal as well as bring a range of flavours and textures.

Infuse your couscous with international flavours. For a Mediterranean twist, incorporate feta, olives and sun-dried tomatoes. Moroccan-inspired couscous can include spices like cinnamon or ginger and dried fruits. Or try an Indian-inspired version with curry powder, peas and cashews. The possibilities are endless.
