Freezing food offers an effective solution for reducing food waste. Not only does it extend the shelf life of perishable items, but it also opens a world of convenience, affordability and sustainability. Here are five ways freezing food can contribute to the fight against food waste.

1. Freezing food is a method of preservation.

Freezing stops the deterioration process, slowing down the growth of bacteria, yeasts and mould. This means frozen food lasts longer and retains its natural flavour, nutrients and texture.

2. Frozen food allows for effective meal planning.

If you have what you need in the freezer, you don’t have to rush to the shop for last-minute ingredients or rush to whip up a meal to ensure fresh food doesn’t go to waste. Fish and seafood are also conveniently frozen in individual portions so you can cook only what you need.

3. Frozen food retains its freshness.

You may think “fresh is best”, but if food is frozen at its peak, it actually remains as close to its natural state as possible. This means that when you’re ready to enjoy a delicious meal, your frozen fish will taste just as good as when it was caught.

Reducing food waste: The valuable role of freezing4. There’s less demand on fresh produce.

When we rely on frozen alternatives, the demand for fresh produce decreases. This, in turn, can reduce the pressure on resources such as land and water, ultimately leading to a more sustainable food system.

5. Frozen food can be more affordable.

Frozen food is often less expensive than their fresh counterparts and, because there’s no need to cook and eat it immediately, you can take advantage of discounts by buying in bulk and storing it for use at a later date.

Incorporating frozen food in your meal plan can make a significant difference, allowing you to enjoy delicious meals, take better care of our environment, and minimise wastage – one frozen fish fillet at a time. Start by checking out Sea Harvest’s extensive range of frozen food products here.
