WATCH: Blood splatter cookies

    cake flour
  • 125
    salted butter
  • 125
    castor sugar
  • 1 1/2
    eggs - beaten
  • 1
    vanilla essence or extract
  • ICING:
  • 2
    icing sugar - sifted
  • 2
    filtered water
  • 3
    drops (or more) red food coluring

Start by preparing the dough: 

Make sure that the butter is soft. Cream the butter and the castor sugar until light and fluffy. Next add the eggs and the vanilla. Incorporate the flour until you reach a thick, sticky dough. Cover the dough in clingwrap and refrigerate for at least an hour. 

When ready to roll out, preheat oven to 180°C. Using a cookie cutter, cut the dough into circles or any other shape you prefer.

Place onto a baking sheet and place in the fridge for 30 mins before baking. Place the baking tin in the oven and bake for 15 minutes or until the dough is a light tea colour. remove and allow to cool completely. 

To make the icing, combine the water with the icing sugar until smootha. Pipe or spoon the icing onto each cookie and allow to cool and 'set'. Next, add some more water to the icing (just enough to make it slightly more watery) and then add enough red food colouring so that it resembles the colour of blood. 

Using a fork or small spoon, flick the red food colouring across the cookies so that it looks like splatters. Wait for this to 'set' as well before serving.
