Pears in red wine sauce

    medium dessert pears
  • 150
    ml
    water
  • 150
    ml
    red wine
  • 100
    sugar
    sugar
  • 1
    cinnamon stick
  • 2
    cloves
  • 15
    ml
    cornflour
 

Method

45 minutes
 
Peel and core the pears, but leave them whole.
Place in a small, deep casserole dish.
Mix water, wine and sugar, and add cinnamon and cloves, and pour over pears.
Cover and bake in a preheated 180 °C oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until very tender.
Transfer pears very carefully to a serving dish.
Strain syrup into a small saucepan.
Mix the cornflour with a little cold water and add to syrup, stirring continuously over a medium heat until slightly thickened.
