    instant dry yeast
  • 400
    g
    cake flour
  • 5
    ml
    salt
  • 45
    ml
    sugar
  • 60
    g
    margarine
  • 1
    large egg
  • 15
    ml
    milk
  • 60
    ml
    lukewarm water
 

Method

 
Combine flour, salt and sugar together. Add instant dry yeast.
Melt margarine in milk and allow to cool.
Add dry ingredients with egg and enough water to form a soft, pliable dough. Knead well for 10 min until dough is smooth and elastic.
Place on a lightly floured surface, cover with plastic and allow to rest for 20 minutes.
Knock down dough and divide into 15 equal pieces, shape into balls.
Alternatively roll out dough to 1 cm thickness and cut out with a dough cutter.
Place on a lightly floured board, over and leave to rise for 30-40 min.
Heat oil in a deep saucepan.
Drop risen side down into hot oil and fry slowly, turning once to cook the other side.
Drain on kitchen paper and roll in castor sugar or brush with glaze icing or dip in melted chocolate.
