Method

 
1. Preheat oven to 180 ºC. Grease a 12-hollow patty pan. 2. Mix filling ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer for about 5 minutes. Drain off excess juice and leave filling to cool. Remove the cloves. 3. To make base and crust, beat margarine and sugar together. Add egg and beat until light and fluffy. 4. Sift flour, baking powder and a little salt together and add to egg mixture to form a soft dough. 5. Roll out two thirds of pastry into a large rectangle and cut out 12 circles with a cookie cutter. Press into greased patty pan. 6. Spoon apple filling into pastry cases. Coarsely grate remaining dough over filling, or cut it into strips and arrange in a lattice pattern over filling. 7. Bake in oven for 45 minutes. Dust with icing sugar and serve hot with whipped cream.
