Ham and cheese French toast

A little bit of mid-week, cheesy comfort food.

    slices cheddar cheese
  • 150
    sliced ham- optional
  • 8
    slices baguette (french bread) or ordinary bread slices
  • 2
  • 1/2
  • salt and freshly milled black pepper
  • 30
    butter for frying
Servings: Change Serving


Place 4 cheese slices together with the ham slices on 4 bread slices. Top with the remaining cheese and bread slices to make sandwiches.

Whisk together the eggs, milk and salt and pepper. Carefully dip the sandwiches into the egg mixture and let them soak well.

Heat the butter in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook the sandwiches in batches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until golden and cheese is melted.

Leave out the ham and serve the cheesy french toast with preserves such as figs or oranges.

Tip of the day

Carving meat
Always allow your roast to rest for 5 to 15 minutes before carving so that the juices can be reabsorbed and the meat presents an even surface when sliced. Use a short- or long-bladed knife, and a two-pronged carving fork with a guard. To prevent the meat from losing juice, steady it with the flat of the fork, rather than piercing.
