Here’s how to survive the overindulgence of the festive season
Balancing festive joy amid diet culture pressures and indulgent celebrations can be a challenge for most, so we looked to inspiration from influencers in the wellness space for some tips.
Navigating the festive season can indeed be a challenging terrain, especially in a society where diet culture is pervasive and the celebrations are often synonymous with indulgence.
Diet culture refers to a societal focus on promoting restrictive eating habits, often with the goal of achieving a specific body shape or size. It’s a system that places a high value on thinness, associating it with success, beauty, and health while stigmatising larger bodies.
Factor in the stress that comes with the season, and it can be an overwhelming time for many, particularly those dealing with eating disorders. But the festive season should be about embracing joy, gratitude, and connections rather than feeling burdened by societal pressures!
We looked to some inspiring influencers in the wellness space and came across a post from Michaela Mallet founder of the Better With Balance brand. The post focuses on how to deal with diet culture pressures during the festive season.
Here’s how to make the most of this wonderful time despite societal pressures:
- Focus on enjoyment, not restriction: Instead of fixating on limitations, concentrate on the joy of being with loved ones and savouring special moments.
- Set boundaries: Be clear about your boundaries regarding discussions around food and body image. PS. It is never okay to comment on people’s bodies of food choices regardless of what season we find ourselves in. Instead, engage in conversations that uplift and support everyone’s well-being to make for a more joyous time.
- Seek support: Connect with individuals who understand your journey. The community and encouragement can make a significant difference!
- Mindful eating: Practice mindful eating by paying attention to hunger cues and choosing foods that make you feel good physically and mentally.

Remember, it’s okay to enjoy the festivities without succumbing to the pressures of diet culture and we’re probably going to “indulge” a little more than we “should” and there is nothing wrong with that.
If you are looking to balance your indulgence this festive season, especially is you tend to binge eat when under pressure, we took some inspiration from health and fitness coach Uleen Fourie.
Here’s what to focus on so you can still make the most of the festive season when trying to focus on balance:
- Start the day with movement and a meal: The benefits of movement, even just a simple walk can do wonders to your mood and overall wellbeing and a proper meal far outweigh the benefits of being hungry. No good decisions can be made while hungry!
- Dish up foods and sit down to eat them: That way you can be more mindful about what you are eating!
- Include nutrient-rich choices: Balance indulgent foods with nutrient-rich options like fruits, veggies, and lean proteins to nourish your body.
- Avoid labelling foods: Try to see food as fuel. There are no “bad” foods and if you feel like something sweet, there is no need to label it as a “treat” – have it, enjoy it and don’t beat yourself up about it!
