We recently reported that Nestlé announced their chocolates would soon contain less sugar.
This change has now started to come into effect as Nestlé has changed its KitKat recipe for the first time since World War II. The Daily Mail reported that KitKats containing 10% less sugar will hit UK stores next week and will soon replace the existing versions. This comes as an attempt to cut more than 900000kg of sugar from the UK’s diet.
KitKat told Food24 that the new recipe is a global initiative and will also apply to South Africa. “We are currently working on the recipe, and the product should be available towards the end of the year. Exciting stuff!”, they said.
Meanwhile in the UK, even though this recipe change now means healthier KitKat bars, with less calories and sugar, many consumers are up in arms due to fears that the taste will be compromised. Nestle has however reassured chocolate lovers that the taste will remain exactly the same. Phew!
Fiona Kendrick, Chairman and CEO of Nestlé UK and Ireland confirmed that the taste and price will be unaffected. She said, “Milk and cocoa has formed the basis of the KitKat® recipe ever since it was introduced in 1936 so, while people might have been expecting us to add something else, this is a great example of us using our strength in research and innovation to develop a great recipe that replaces sugar with a bit more of the existing, natural ingredients that people know and love.”
The chocolate to wafer ratio will also remain unchanged. What will change though is the amount of milk and cocoa used – 33% more than previously.
