It’s time to pass up that ham roll
Last month, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of the World Health Organisation (WHO), announced that they were going to classify processed meat as carcinogenic to humans “based on sufficient evidence in humans that the consumption of processed meat causes colorectal cancer.”
Whether a flexitarian or passionate meat eater – moderation and conscious consumer buying behaviour can now be seen as active health benefits in the fight against cancer.
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) also emphasis the role that diet and leading a balanced lifestyle plays in reducing your cancer risk. They recommend eating five portions of fruit and vegetables while limiting your intake of meat. Instead of eating meat, CANSA recommends you rather eat more beans, lentils and soya products.
So if your family are passionate meat eaters who love their sausages how do you tackle cutting down on processed meats? It doesn’t have to be all lentils and beans, there are other alternatives.
Brands like Fry’s Family Foods have been making meat-free alternatives for over two decades and their products are not only meat free, they are non-GMO and cholesterol free too. Plus of course, there is the added benefit of them being cruelty free.
