Who says cocktails are only for summer? Here are some ideas on how to stay warm and cheerful at home, all through the cooler months.
First things first: before you panic, we’re happy to share that there’s no need to rush out and purchase a whole trolley load of new products for your home bar. The trick is really in how you use what you already have – and most importantly, what you love – to make those winter-worthy libations.
Of course, some items do lend themselves to colder temperatures. For example, you’ll probably be less inclined to reach for your Pimm’s when the mercury falls, and instead perhaps yearn for something rich and comforting, like a creamy liqueur.
When it comes to spirits, however, with a little imagination and some skill, you can make magic. While brown spirits like whisky and brandy typically have a more wintery vibe, there’s certainly room for gins, agave spirits and more.
It’s all about the greater flavours of your concoctions, as well as the feelings they inspire when sipping them in the comfort of your cosy home. Let’s get cooking!
Warm whistle-whetters
Of course, the most obvious way to warm the cockles would simply be to serve your cocktail heated. Some of the classics, like your Hot Toddies, are often a go-to when fighting a cold, but they’re actually delicious any time. You can also make like the Europeans and stir up a pot of mulled wine or cider, fortified with brandy and flavoured with spices.
Decadent dessert-like drinks
Another surefire way to feel snug is by spoiling yourself with something sweet and extravagant. You could go all out and try your hand at fat washing a spirit with an actual dessert, such as lemon-meringue pie, or replicate the flavours of a dessert instead, like in some of the below recipes.
Sultry smoke
Enhance your fireside bliss with a smoky drink, preferably consumed in your finest dressing gown and fluffiest slippers. A simple trick here would be to go for a nice peated whisky Old Fashioned, or if you have some patience, try one of fabulous infusion-based cocktails below.
Winter preserves and spices
Using winter spices in your drinks is a no-brainer. Think nutmeg, cinnamon, raisins, Maraschino cherries and, of course, warming ginger.
Luxurious bubbles
Another great treat to uplift your spirits is Champagne or Cap Classique … but don’t stop there. Use the bubbles as a base for some of the most luxurious cocktails out there, like these three goodies.
Satisfying coffee
Kick that winter slump with a good ole cup of Joe, but mixed into a cocktail, obviously. We all know and love the Irish Coffee, and it’s many variations, but have you tried making your Dalgona coffee boozy?
Teas and ales
Finally, teas and ales are great for tavern-style libations; drink these and pretend you’re in a moody roadhouse with fellow travellers while your trusty stead rests in the stable.
