Comfort food with a twist

What food do you cook when you’re at home?

Not contemporary Asian-French fusion with a touch of Pacific
Rim, I’m sure. I surely don’t, I go for those lip-smacking old favourites
that we all love like spaghetti bolognaise and lasagne.

I mean, what pops your tart more on a midweek night… a rich
and meaty cottage pie topped with buttery mash, or a truffle-infused pigeon
terrine with a langoustine jus?

There’s definitely a space for fabulous fine dining and
restaurant food. But when you’re living life
day to day and need to fill that end-of-the-day hunger, it’s real live food you
want, not an artistic offering to the food gods.

It seems that overseas, comfort food with a twist is
trending. Our sassy ed-in-chief, Sam Wilson was at The Taste of London recently
and saw this in action. She had the gastro-pleasure of sinking her gnashers
into a foie gras burger and a fancy hotdog – trés cool you must agree?

You can gourmet-up a burger in no time by adding interesting spices and fresh herbs to the patty and ladle on some funky sauces.
Get some inspiration from our amazing hamburger competition and cast your vote
for your favourite one.

How about adding some heaven into your mac ‘n cheese? Try
this mac ‘n cheese with a twist or this oozey 3 cheese macaroni and cheese

Try these for jazzed-up lasagne: Broccoli and ricotta lasagne, grilled aubergine lasagne and this lighter open lasagne with
chicken, peas and lemon
.

Pump up those porkers with these funky recipes: Bangers and mash with a sweet-chilli glaze, braised pork sausages and spinach mash, and these perfectly delicious pork sausages in honey with mustard mashed
potatoes

So you see, it’s easy to bump up those basics to movie star
status without the fuss.

Happy cooking!
