‘The Bear’ omelette: A how-to guide

When we aren’t cooking or eating, the other thing we love to do is watch shows centred around … you got it: food.

The Bear, a series focused around an award-winning fine-dining chef who returns to his hometown to take over his family’s humble sandwich shop, has gone viral, with many viewers loving the dry, sarcastic, comedic feel mixed with drama that pulls on your heartstrings. Throughout the series, a focal point is food – the process of it, the feel, the taste… The way the series is shot and produced has created somewhat of an immersive experience.

The show first aired in 2022 and has since risen to stardom with a lineup of well-known actors, including lead Jeremy Allen White, former star of Shameless, a longstanding drama series that aired in 2011 with a total of 11 seasons.

In the latest season of The Bear, which aired in July, Sydney Adamu, also known as Syd, the chef de cuisine in the show, prepares an omelette for Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, a character in the series.

This omelette has become iconically known as “Syd’s Omelette”, and has captivated audiences across the globe with viral trends on TikTok recreating the dish.

With the world in a frenzy over this traditional French omelette with a twist, we decided to recreate the recipe at home to find out if it truly is worth the hype and tastes just as good as it looks on The Bear.

Is ‘The Bear’ omelette worth the hype?

When it comes to eggs, like many things in life, it is all about personal preference, and this recipe calls for a traditional French omelette. French omelettes can be characterised by their pale yellow colour and being smooth on the outside and tender on the inside. The inside is creamy while the exterior is soft and, as the recipe calls for butter, it’s a melt-in-your-mouth omelette experience.

The added Boursin cheese, a soft cream cheese that features garlic and herbs, is the perfect flavour combo to level up a basic omelette.

We admit that we have been wondering where potato chips on an omelette has been all our lives because the mix of textures truly elevates this simple dish and we definitely share Natalie’s thoughts after she took her first bite: “I could cry.” Because this omelette ticks all the boxes. So, yes, it is worth the hype.
