Music artist Tyla takes the ‘cake’ at the Grammys!: Here are 5 South African desserts to celebrate her win

The 22-year-old South African music artist and global sensation Tyla Laura Seethal has won a Grammy! Tyla was awarded the 2024 Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for her iconic song “Water”.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Tyla has soared to international fame with her upbeat, infectious and catchy music that we have to admit has a true South African feel to it, so much so that a trend started on social media after the release of her winning song and performance of “Water”.

If there is one thing we are sure of it is that Tyla is very proud of her roots, from her lekker Saffa accent to her love of her home country. In a podcast interview with Big Boy TV, Tyla shared that when she is travelling, the one thing she misses the most is South African food – in fact, she even travels with a big bag of maize so she can make pap, saying that South African food is “the best”.

Here are four sweet treats we would prepare for Tyla to celebrate this massive achievement.

Peppermint Crisp Tart ice cream

Nothing says South Africa more than a sweet, decadent and delicious Peppermint Crisp tart. (Argue with us in the comments – we’ll wait!)

We’re all for summer vibes and this ice-cream version is just the thing on these hot summer days.

Milk tart

As a staple sweet treat all year round, milk tart is the gift that keeps on giving. From the classic to innovative creations such as Amarula milk tart, we know that this is a sweet celebratory treat that hits the spot every time!

Koeksisters

Koeksisters and South Africans go together like bread and butter and this quick and easy recipe is a full-proof sweet treat we know Tyla will love.

Hertzoggies

Filled with apricot jam, these classic sweet pastry bites are perfect with a cup of tea. We can imagine that after all the hustle and bustle, Tyla will need a quiet and relaxing moment to herself – and what better way to destress than with some hertzoggies?

Bonus recipe: Grilled corn and cheese pap

While this is not a sweet treat option, we couldn’t help but add this to our list of must-makes for Tyla, especially after she mentioned her love of pap! This quick and easy grilled corn-and-cheese pap toastie is a bite that she’ll just love.
