Braai with Food24 on Heritage Day

With just 2 days to Heritage Day, we hope you’re gearing up to shisa nyama!

No matter what your heritage is or what your favourite SA heritage food is we urge you to grab the opportunity to get together with friends and family and whip up a real feast while taking a moment to acknowledge your ancestors and what they’ve have passed down to you – whether it be food, language, culture or occupation. A South African Thanksgiving of sorts!

We’re going to be celebrating with a huge braai on Wednesday and if you plan to do the same, we suggest you hop straight to our braai recipes section and create a Heritage Day menu! How about trying your hand at these lemon and honey glazed lamb chops? Or some smoky ribs? Perhaps you enjoy seafood more. In which case you simply must make these festive prawns on the braai or a braaied snoek. This special braai basting sauce is great with red meat and chicken.

Needing something to nibble on while you wait for the coals? Snack on these cute crumbed biltong and ricotta fritters. So moreish! As much as I enjoy braavleis, the side dishes are usually my favourite. Here is a list of our best braai side dishes. And don’t forget the braaibroodjies! Eating low-carb? Then perhaps stick to these 10 amazing braai salads.

Now, about condiments. Who can ever say no to a mushroom sauce? Or a simple Béarnaise sauce…and if you’re marinating your meat, how about using one of these braai marinades?

We recommend that you gather a group of friends and cook this insanely delicious lamb potjie. And while you’re putting in the effort, you may as well make dessert on the braai too! We love this bread and butter pudding on the braai, or these cool donut s’mores. If you love baking, give the oven a rest and cook a chocolate banana cake on the braai. How fun!

You see, the options for braaing are endless – which makes it that much more exciting. If you don’t really participate in cooking at the fire, we give you full permission to relax and kick back with one of these 5 rich and juicy red wines – perfect with any braai meat. And if the weather is good, crack open a bottle of one of these 10 New-release white wines for summer.

Oh, I’m getting so keyed up just thinking about all the wonderful things we are going to be sinking our teeth into come Wednesday.

Yours in firelighters and hot coals,

Tess
