What is healthy eating anyway?

It’s that time of the year… where gyms are packed to the rafters with people trying to fit in every millisecond of exercise because they know, like me, that in a few weeks the weather will be glorious and they’ll be dusting off their swimming costumes for the first pool party of the season. The thought secretly terrifies me.

In addition to this ‘sprint to Spring’, people tend to go into strict military-mode, pledging themselves to a healthier way of eating to shed unwanted Winter kilos. But here’s the thing; our relationship with food has evolved so drastically and there’s really no one-size-fits-all anymore (excuse the pun).

People sometimes ask me if we have any healthy recipes on our site. And I find myself replying, ‘well, yes… but what is your definition of “healthy”?’. We have a whole section dedicated to healthy recipes. And let’s not forget our famous top 10 skinny jeans recipes. Oh – and our top 10 high protein recipes for a slimmer body. We’ve even got eating tips for bikini season!

Most of these recipes will suit many of our readers but if you look closely, some of them contain carbs, which – according to Professor Tim Noakes, are very unhealthy. He recommends that we all stick to eating low carb high fat meals. Here are our top recipes for Banting. Not familiar with Banting? Read all about it here.

Although the Banting revolution has swept across South Africa faster than you can say ‘cauli-rice’ (there’s even a restaurant that only serves low carb dishes!), a large majority of folk still look forward to a rusk with their coffee and a piece of toast for breakfast.

Not eating gluten? Well, we’ve got your back too! Here are our top 10 gluten-free recipes. Only eating salad for the next month? Not to worry, these 5 healthy, feel-good salads will keep you full and happy and our best ‘no lettuce’ salads will ensure you don’t get bored along the way. Oh, you’re vegetarian?  We’ve got just the place for you to hang out!

You see, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. In other words, one person’s healthy is another person’s unhealthy. In my opinion, there’s no right or wrong. Try to limit processed food and do what feels good for your body. After all, it’s the only one you have to live in!
