Rooibos goes global at New York Fashion Week

Rooibos tea conjures up fond memories of my childhood as my parents believed it could cure almost any ailment. I’m no doctor, so I can’t speak to its medical properties, but I do love a summer trend, and it thrills me to say rooibos is about to become more than just a staple in my tea cupboard!

Last month, Rooibos Pantone® was announced as one of the top 10 colours in the Fashion Colour Trend Report for Spring 2024 at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

World-renowned colour specialist and executive director of the US-based Pantone® Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman says: “The colours for NYFW Spring 2024 introduce a new interpretation of current times as memories of the past and a glimpse of the future. Just as people sometimes use food to revitalise themselves, the spring colour palette can be equally refreshing. The health benefits of herbal tisanes, for example, extend beyond personal wellness. They are restorative in every sense. They are refreshing to taste, but also refreshing to look at. The Rooibos Tea Pantone® 18-1355 is full-bodied red imbued with rich, woody notes.”

8 recipes to celebrate rooibos’s rise in the fashion ranks

I love the idea of Rooibos Pantone® in my kitchen – in a warm splashback or in a tablecloth especially for springtime occasions. But I also love eating or drinking anything that makes the most of rooibos’s sweet and earthy herbaceousness. So here are eight recipes that champion the South African tea.

1.     Rooibos beer

2.     Rooibos koeksisters

3.     Fruity rooibos and pineapple relish

4.     Rooibos liquor

5.     Rooibos tea and berry crème brûlée

6.     Rooibos ice cream

7.     Rooibos chai tiramisu

8.     Rooibos tea and ricotta mousse
