New and interesting restaurants to try in 2016

I love eating out in Summer. It’s just better. Winter has Winter Specials, red wine, fires and stews…but Summer – Summer has white wine, sushi, cocktails, seafood, burgers, Mexican, cold beer, sunshine, outdoor seating – need I go on?

There are so many places to choose from – especially if you live in a big city. So here are some of the places that have bleeped on our radar so far this year.

We’ll start with Cape Town – because that’s where the Food24 team is based.

Coffee seems to be the big thing and speciality coffee bars have sprung up all over town. I recently visited Dapper Coffee Co. On the corner of Bree and Strand. The coffee is top-notch and the ‘Superfood salad’ is the business. Apart from the food, it shares a space with a vintage car shop. There is even a vintage speedboat! A must-visit for any car enthusiast.

Folk Coffee Anthropology – doesn’t the name alone entice you to find out what is happening there?

Luke Dale-Roberts has opened Naturalis. You can’t book so it’s first come, first serve. A relief to all his fans eagerly awaiting the arrival of the latest cooking lab. Think fermentation, curing, culturing and drying.

Does a small Irish Whiskey bar called Hanks – tucked away inside Weinhaus + Biergarten (the old &Union) on Bree appeal to you? It does to me.

Judging by the number of extremely good-looking people bulging out of there as you drive past, Arcade is clearly the place to be on Bree. A very hip venue with a basic menu serving beers, cocktails, pizzas and burgers and some very nice salads and wraps.

Little Saint is also new on Bree.  If healthy food is the way forward then this spot has got it just right. And there is a super-cool herb wall inside the restaurant. I’d recommend you check it out for lunch or breakfast soon.

Speaking of breakfasts – here is a list of places in Cape town that do a cracking all-day offering.  Because having a lie-in is just such a treat sometimes.

Looking for a cool Sunday night dinner recommendation? Look no further.

And finally, Rocomamas – Joburg’s favourite burger – has hit Cape Town! And we are excited.

In Joburg everyone is talking about The Potato Shed.  In a building that is 104 years old and channeling the bootlegger brewery vibe, we can see why this place is so popular. Watch this space for a full review coming soon!

Feeling the heat in Joburg? Then check out Paul’s homemade ice cream – newly opened in The Zone.  If you are looking for ice cream in Jozi – then check out this list.  If you are hot in Pretoria then make sure you consult this article compiled by our intrepid Kate Liquorish. Also a very exciting new place called Fermier has popped up Pretoria. Completely self-sustainable and wow, it looks insane. If you like Mexican – then El Pistolera looks like the place for you.

If cutting carbs is on your agenda then make yourself acquainted with these Banting friendly Joburg restaurants. It’s a lifestyle.

Durban. Ray’s Kitchen in Salt Rock is all about home-cooked food for friends and family. And The Coop is chicken fast food in all shapes and sizes.

PE has a spate of great new restaurants that opened towards the end of last year.  Here is a list of them – so make sure you check it out.

If you have seen a new and exciting place open up near you – then please give us a holler on editor@food24.com or tweet us on @food24 or tag us on Instagram @food24_sa and we’ll share the love.

Happy Summer eating!
