How to decorate festive biscuits for some holiday fun

Decorating store-bought biscuits with a cute festive twist is just the family-friendly activity your holiday entertainment activities need this festive season! It will keep children occupied for a few hours, it’s a relatively affordable activity the whole family can enjoy and the results are seriously adorable – not to mention tasty, too!

What you will need:

An assortment of biscuits in different shapes and colours
Melted milk and white chocolate in small bowls (for affordability, we used baking chocolate)
Pretzels (some broken and some left whole)
Edible googly eyes (these you can find ready-made at most baking stores)
Sprinkles (we opted for a festive mix with red and green stars, but you can use whatever you have on hand)
White marshmallows (keep the pink ones for snacking)
Smarties
Willing helpers

Reindeer faces

Using different-sized biscuits of your choice, assemble the reindeer faces by dipping a pair of eyes in chocolate and then place them onto the biscuit, followed by 1 red Smartie below the eyes for the nose. Dip two pretzels in chocolate and place them above the eyes. Set aside to allow the chocolate to set.

You can use whole pretzels for bigger biscuits or big antlers, or broken pretzels for smaller biscuits or smaller antlers.

Melting snow blobs

Instead of calling them snowmen, we’re calling them snow blobs! To begin, grab your biscuits. For bigger biscuits leave the marshmallows whole and for smaller biscuits cut each marshmallow in half. Stick the marshmallow to each biscuit with a small amount of melted white chocolate, allowing the chocolate to set before moving onto the next stage.

While holding the biscuit, dip each marshmallow in a generous amount of white chocolate. As you turn the biscuit over, the white chocolate will start to run down the marshmallow onto the biscuit. This will give the chocolate-coated marshmallow the desired “melting snow” effect. (If desired, you can use a spoon to add more melted chocolate to make sure the whole surface of the biscuit is covered.)

Before the chocolate sets, attach a pair of eyes, half an orange Smartie as the carrot “nose” just below the eyes, broken pretzel bits or coloured sugared vermicelli for the twiggy arms, and some coloured star sprinkles or Smarties as buttons.

Wreaths

Using round biscuits of your choice, run some of the melted chocolate in a thick circle around the biscuit. Dunk the surface with the melted chocolate ring into a shallow bowl filled with festive sprinkles.

The festive sprinkles will stick to the chocolate, creating a festive wreath in a matter of moments!

Festive lights

Drizzle some melted chocolate along a biscuit of choice and decorate with an assortment of halved Smarties and sprinkles to create festive lights.

Tips:

Have a bowl of warm water set to the side. If the melted chocolate starts to set, dip each bowl in the warm water to keep the chocolate at a dipping consistency.

If you don’t have chocolate on hand, substitute with a mixture of icing sugar and water. The consistency should be on the thicker side so the icing will adhere to the biscuits properly.

Remember to have fun! Nothing needs to be too precise. It’s perfectly okay to have wonky reindeer faces and lopsided melting snow blobs – they’re all going to taste delicious regardless and make for great conversation!
