Cooking on the coals

You don’t need me to tell you that Braai Season is in full swing! Households across the country are going through bags of wood and charcoal faster than the cauliflower sales at my local supermarket. But I’m not complaining!

There’s nothing we at Food24 love more than an epic braai on a hot Summer’s day or evening. Breakfast braais are also a thing! (If you have the discipline to wake up early enough to get a fire going). I often have dreams of this naan breakfast pizza

Braai sides this year are going to be a big thing and you’ll really want to pull out the stops when entertaining guests. Nothing fancy – just simple, fresh ingredients that when thrown together, create the “mmmmmmm” factor you’re looking for. Braaibroodjies ain’t going nowhere! (Sorry for you, Banters) so make sure to have a steady supply of cheese in your fridge. Keen for something different? These banana and ham jaffles are the bomb!

Meat-wise, I can’t get enough of Damian Ettish’s spicy chicken wings. You can see how to make them in this video. Lamb kofta served in toasted pitas are real crowd-pleaser and your mates will love this dry rub steak baguette, topped with pickles, hot sauce and fresh coriander. You don’t even need plates. Win!

Quenching your thirst at a braai isn’t that difficult. There are great craft beers that go wonderfully with braai food. Think refreshing Saison, fruity Weiss beer, or a hoppy, flavourful Amber ale

Wine more your thing? This week Cathy recommends 6 red wines for your braai and these white wines for general Summer happiness. If you’re halfway through #DryJanuary , we urge you to make a big pitcher of Rooibos ginger iced tea. You might never go back to alcohol, it’s so damn delicious.

Thought I’d forgotten desserts? Never! Try a Mascarpone, berry and nut dessert (Banting-friendly) or this coconut and lime ice cream. But if you don’t have the time, marshmallows on the braai are always a welcome treat AND child-approved.

Food24 has got your back this Summer!

Remember to tag #food24_sa on any of your foodstagrams, and they will appear on the website for all to see 🙂

Wishing you warm weekends and busy braai tongs!
