Types:

Waffles are not all the same. While they may all generally follow the
same honeycomb-type pattern, their ingredients and toppings can be
quite different, depending on where they are from.

Stroopwafel
In Nordic countries, waffles are made extremely
thin. Two waffles are put together and wedged with some type of syrup
to form a stroopwafel.

Japanese waffles or taiyaki
A taiyaki is cooked in a similar way to other waffles, but is shaped like a fish. The toppings of choice for the taiyaki include everything from a bean paste to chocolate-flavoured custard.

Potato waffles
Potato waffles are very popular in the UK. It
is a savoury food that is formed from oil, seasoning and, of course,
potatoes. There are many different forms of preparation for the potato
waffle such as backing, toasting, frying or grilling.

Then, if none of these appeal to you, there are always sugar
waffles, fruit waffles, soft waffles, biscuit waffles and waffle
ice-cream cones.

Toppings
Waffle toppings come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are also
dependent on the type of waffle that is being eaten. Waffles mostly
have sweet toppings, especially when they are eaten as desserts and
breakfasts. More often that not they are eaten with maple syrup or
honey, usually with cream or vanilla ice-cream.

But if you want to get more daring add fruits: strawberries,
bananas, plums, kiwi, apricot, peaches, guavas, cherries and many other
delicious fruits are fabulous additions to waffles. If you are feeling
a little more decadent try some chocolate sauce or ice-cream of a
different flavour. A great topping is bananas smothered in chocolate
sauce and topped off with a dollop of rich vanilla ice-cream, but
that’s just me. You can come up with a million other variations if you
play around a little.

But in the meantime here are a few delicious waffle recipes to get you started.
