Foods for the changing season

I used the word “autumnal” yesterday in a tweet and it dawned on me that we are actually knee deep in the season of Autumn. It’s like Summer just crept out the back door without even saying GOODBYE! I’m going to miss its beautiful berries, its glorious gift of artichokes and my favourite – asparagus!

But you know what they say… when one door closes, another one opens. And that is why cooking seasonally is just so much fun. There’s never really time to get bored of eating the same thing; because before we know it, nature’s next cycle is subtly nudging us towards our big heavy soup pots and casserole dishes. I can already feel the crisp nip in the air when I sip my morning coffee on the balcony.

Now is the time to start upping your Vitamin C intake. Nobody likes getting sick and if your immune system is locked and loaded, those little bugs won’t stand a chance! Pick up some citrus from your local fruit seller and a bag of crunchy Granny Smith apples – a great source of fibre and they are amazing at stabalising blood sugar.

With the onset of Autumn, comes shorter days and chillier weather, which somehow just makes us want to eat more! I can’t stop thinking about carby, cheesy comfort food – like these cream cheese stuffed sweet potatoeschicken, butternut and chorizo casserole or a hearty beef lasagne. Squirrelling  away some red wine is also on my to-do list before the rains come down in Cape Town. I’m thinking big bold Cabernets and a few spicy Shirazes.

Farewell ice lollies and cold salads! See you in 6 months.
