Food for the holidays

You don’t need to be a mother to know that June /July school holidays are a big thing! Pretty much everyone I know with kids in school has gathered their family, packed a suitcase and hot-footed it out of town to visit loved ones in faraway places or to enjoy some quality time in a peaceful, exotic location.

One thing I remember about my own school holidays was sitting down with to a wonderful home-cooked meal with my family.  For someone who spent months at boarding school, this was an absolute treat. There’s something so special about sharing a meal with the ones close to you or those you haven’t seen for a long time.

Family-style feasting is where it’s at, and nowadays people are starting to entertain this way as well; with large platters overflowing with food where everyone helps themselves. It’s laid-back, casual and unpretentious. And frankly, isn’t that what a holiday is all about?

Whether you’re cooking for a crowd or having fun in the kitchen with the little ones, we’ve rounded up a host of recipes to make sure no one goes hungry! Have some school holiday foodie fun and let your kids get their hands dirty by letting them make pizza dough, jelly oranges and colourful cupcakes.

Feeding an army? There’s nothing better than an enormous lasagna. It’s fuss-free, homey and comforting. Make sure you cook enough for seconds! These 3 chicken pie recipes are also fantastic as they can be prepared in advance.

When snack time rolls around, it’s always a good idea to have a few home-made treats up your sleeve. I love these peanut butter bomb cookies and your family will go berserk for chocolate and cranberry brownies.

If you’re out and about and looking for places to eat, have a look at what restaurants are in your area. We’ve even got a great list of child-friendly restaurants in SA. For those kicking back at this week’s Knysna Oyster festival, here are 5 places you simply must get to.

Lastly, how are your wine stocks? Needing a few more bottles to get you through? Try one of these top 10 fireside reds.

If you’re like me and only pretending to be on holiday, let’s enjoy happy hour after work and have a cocktail!

Love and late morning lie-ins,

Tess
