5 sides to make with your curry this winter

The icy winter chill calls for hearty, wholesome, comforting and perhaps even spicy dishes to get your blood flowing.

The aromatic and earthy flavours of a bowl of curry envelop our taste buds and warm our tummies, one of the many reasons they’re a winter favourite.

Curries go with nearly everything from rice to naan and more, but there are some sides that are a must.

Here are five sides to make with curry

Roti

As one of the most popular and well-known Indian sides, roti is a traditional Indian flatbread. Perennially popular in South Africa, roti is made using a few simple ingredients: flour, water, salt and ghee.

Ghee is clarified butter made by heating regular butter over a low heat for an extended period of time.

Naan

Naan is known for its large, elongated size and bubbly outer layer. Whether you prefer it with butter, garlic or just plain, naan soaks up all the flavours of curry and makes it the perfect side to scoop up all the flavour.

Basmati rice

Long-grained, fluffy basmati rice is traditionally grown in India and is perfect with curry.

The light and airy texture of the rice soaks up all the flavour and gravy of a curry. We have a fool-proof basmati rice recipe that’s guaranteed to result in a bowl of tender rice.

Paratha

While paratha may look similar to roti, this flatbread-like side dish has several layers, creating a flaky look and feel. Paratha can also feature several different types of fillings.

Our sweetcorn paratha recipe is an absolute breeze and its sweet filling makes it the perfect side to a spicy curry.

Raita

Raita is a refreshing side dish to serve with any spicy curry. It’s made with yoghurt, ginger, chillies, cucumber and several other ingredients that pair perfectly with the flavours of a hearty curry.
