Solo had us swooning when they posted this image below of their freshly baked hot cross buns. Glistening and loaded with raisins, these are one not to be missed. For only R7 they’ll be flying out the café so make sure you get yours this week. They also offer a cranberry and white chocolate option.
Jason Bakery and Bardough by Jason, CBD
You can still grab Jason’s famous hot cross buns this week for R15. Both branches will be open on Friday but closed from Saturday to Monday, so make sure you get yours in advance before Easter Sunday. Olympia Café, Kalk Bay
Café Olympia up the cuteness with their signature naughts and crosses hot cross buns. They are open over good Friday and Easter but it is advised to order in advanced – as you can imagine they are as popular as their brilliant breads! A naughts or crosses bun will cost you R8.50.
Knead Bakery, Kloof Street, Palmyra Junction and Sea Point
Knead will be keeping with tradition and serving hot cross buns all week. They will be open on the public holidays, but Palmyra Junction will be closing at 3pm on Friday and Monday. Customers are welcome to place an order for the hot cross buns which come in small at R4 and large at R6.50. Just when we thought pastry hybrids were dying down, Max Bagels introduces the hot cross bagel! This is a not to be missed collab with Honest Chocolate, with hot cross bagels served beneath their famous chocolate spread.

This lovely café has made some traditional tray-baked hot cross buns, perfectly golden and hot out the oven. They are available today and tomorrow only as they will be closed over the Easter Weekend.

The Glenwood Bakery, Glenwood
The Glenwood Bakery, well known for their hand crafted, stone ground flour breads, will naturally be baking up some hot cross buns for Easter. It is best to make an order which can be done in the café. Hot cross buns are priced at R15.
Bread, The Artisanal Bakery, Windermere
This quaint bakery in Windermere area will be selling half a dozen hot cross buns at R25 per batch. They sell out fast so its best to call ahead to reserve or get in early. They will be open over Easter except on Monday. Times are as follows: Friday 8am to 2pm, Saturday 8am to 1pm and Sunday 8am to 1pm.
Old Town Italy Umhlanga and Menlyn, Pretoria
Old Town Italy will be cranking things up a notch (as per usual), in their baked goods department. As if homemade hot cross buns weren’t enough, they’ve got 5 additional tantalising flavours including dark choc chip, coffee chocolate, Banoffee, maple, bacon and banana, and apple cranberry. The buns come in packs of 4 with prices ranging between R35 and R40 per pack. They are also serving hot cross bun flavoured gelato, and both branches are open all week.
Port Elizabeth
Banneton Bakery, Walmer
Banneton will be open over Easter and will be serving their Branded B hot cross buns on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at R12 each. It’s best to get them early as these hot cross buns wait for no man!
Vovo Telo, Richmond Hill
Vovo Telo, the original in PE, will be open all week and will be serving freshly baked hot cross buns and an Easter-inspired chocolate orange loaf.
