Love the food here, and the vibe is unique to Kalk Bay. But some (not all) of the staff are surly and rude. Taking the whole devil may care attitude a bit far. I can forgive having to go to the counter for my cutlery but when spendinig my hard earned money I resent some girl child half my age speaking to me like a nuisance. Tips are earned the same as respect, it's a two way street. Now you know why some people are not being over generous, you just don't deserve it.

What a gem, great food great staff, At first I thought MMMMM ok décor not so good, but that’s the great part of this place, the food and the service make this place not the decor, We had a very fussy hotelier with us, and he had the yellow tail and was raving about it,, My wife had the seared Tuna and was so happy with it she did not even leave a bit for me to try. I am an ex Durban boy and had the Prego, THE BEST PREGO I HAVE EVER TASTED!!!!!! To the whole team at Olympia cafe, we will be back, thanks for the great lunch.

Over the past 1.5 years that I have lived in Cape Town, I had come to love Olympia cafe. The ambience and location are great, and the food is usually excellent. However, I had such an unpleasant time there on a recent trip that I doubt I'll be back, as much as I regret to say that. We were a group of 4, and the evening started off normally. Our waiter chatted with us cheerfully, and brought us water. He then took our order for wine, and a tea for one of our party. After about 5-10 minutes, he had brought cutlery, but hadn't mentioned the wine, or reappeared. Nearby tables, meanwhile, had their wine. Assuming he had forgotten (not a problem), we simply asked another server to bring the wine. We asked politely, without making any criticism. What followed, for the rest of the evening, was simply bizarre. Our waiter came with the wine and glasses, plonked them down on the table, and walked away, without even making eye contact. That was the last time he visited our table for the next 2 hours. Service, such as it was, was given by other servers, who with apparent reluctance, brought our food, and finally, the tea we had ordered at the outset. They never passed by to check if everything was alright, as is common custom in Cape Town and other places. This meant that no one noticed one of us had a broken knife, and flagging someone down proved impossible - so we simply had to share knives with each other in order to be able to actually eat our meal. We watched tables around us (the restaurant was not busy, but not empty) -- for them, the servers passed by, checked in, cleared plates, offered coffee, dessert, another bottle of wine, water. Aside from dropping our food off, no one visited our table during this 2 hour period. Our bottle of wine was finished and left uncollected; our plates were left uncollected, save for a few grabbed by a passing employee. We were certainly not asked if we wanted anything else. We were actually floored. I am not sure if it was because one member of our party was of Indian descent (the only person of colour dining in the restaurant), or because we had north american accents, or because we are young, or because we asked about the wine... I just don't know. It was certainly the strangest and most unpleasant experience any of us have ever had in a restaurant. It's a real shame, because Olympia was a particular favourite of ours.
