10 things to cook in a waffle iron that you’ve never thought of

We all have a Snackwich machine, waffle iron, George Foreman grill, or even a jaffle iron (for the braai) lying around at home. Why not put it to good use? The heat from both the top and the bottom make for quick cooking. All you need is a little creativity, some common sense, and parental supervision.

Here are some top ideas:

1. Bacon
If you like your streaky bacon crispy, there’s no better way to cook it than in a waffle iron or similar type of grill.

2. Scrambled egg omelette
A perfect accompaniment to your crispy bacon. This is not rocket science, but all you need is a basic scrambled egg mixture; cook it in a waffle iron so that it turns out more like an omelette.

3. Waffled fried egg sandwich
Fry the eggs in a hot waffle iron; leave the iron open for sunny-side-up, or closed for “hard fried eggs;” either way, they will be prettier, or at least, more interesting than if fried in a pan. Serve on toast, or serve on… waffles!

You will have to experiment with this one, but it’s basically a case of ‘find a brownie recipe; cook in a waffle iron’ No oven necessary!

5. Waffle cheeseburger
Cook your burger patty in the waffle iron, then top it with cheese until the cheese melts. At worst; the burger patty will fall apart as it might do if you were to fry it in a pan. At best, you burger patty will actually stick together! Serve on a traditional burger bun, or serve on… waffles!

6. Waffled French toast
A genius way to cook your eggy bread. Again, this is not rocket science, but if you need a basic French toast recipe, here it is!

Time to use your creativity again; you could try store-bought pizza bases or make your own, pre-cook, and top as desired on the waffle iron until the cheese is suitably melted. No pizza oven? No problem!

8. Waffled hashbrowns
Aka potato latkes, Rösti, or potato cakes. Grated potatoey goodness, cooked to perfection in the waffle iron!

9. Waffled S’mores
S’more /smôr/ noun: a traditional American sweet snack consisting of a chocolate bar and toasted marshmallows sandwiched between graham crackers. Instead of crackers; you guessed it! Waffles!
