Zeeland

As the name suggests, this is the land next to the sea, and it follows that sea food is the speciality.

Eels, mussels, oysters and shrimps grace the local tables on a regular basis, and freshly caught fish is on the menu at most restaurants on a regular basis.

The Dutch, farm mussels on the sea floor and they harvest about 100,000 tons annually.
This is exported to France, Belgium and Germany.
The centre of production at Yerseke is at the mouth of the River Schelde.

Butter is also made here and the Zeeuws Meisje butter brand proves it.

The Dutch love for sweet things can be tasted in the to-die-for Zeêuwse rondjes (Zeeland butter cookies) but,
the Zeêuwse bolus (cinnamon spiced sweet-bread covered in loads of caramelised cinnamon sugar) – heritage of the Jewish Portuguese bakers.
