World Cup fever – great recipe and drinks ideas!

Hello everyone!

I’m Tess, the new Food Ed here at Food24. As you know our wonderful Caro bid a teary farewell a few weeks ago and we will miss her more than all the craft beer in Cape Town – but rest assured, you haven’t seen the last of her.

So, not only am I writing my first newsletter today, but tonight also marks the opening of this year’s FIFA World Cup – one of the most anticipated events on the planet. Cath, our Restaurant Ed, is delighted that this World Cup starts on a Thursday, because she (like the rest of SA it seems) is going bananas on social media sharing #ThrowBackThursday2010 pics. What a great idea!

If you’re a sports fan, the next month is going to be filled with edgy excitement. And even though our Bafana Boys aren’t in the mix, we are sure you have a favourite team that you will be rooting for. I don’t know too much about soccer but I am going to have to go with England. David Beckham … hello?

There’ll be loads of restaurants across the country setting up big screens and offering awesome specials for game days. But if you are too chilly to venture outdoors, we understand (it’s like Siberia out there!), why not create the atmosphere at home. Gather your friends and family, decorate the living room with flags and get into the Brazil 2014 spirit.

We’re warming up our seats in front of the telly and getting some lip-smacking snacks together for when our tummies start to rumble. These chicken wings with blue cheese dip are perfect for pre-game jitters. And if you’re feeding a crowd, then throw together this quick and easy ‘Feed an Army’ menu.

For those who simply cannot watch a sports game without a boerie roll in hand, we’ve got you sorted with 5 different options to choose from. Have a look at these scrumptious bacon and egg bunny chows which will be ideal for morning games. Holy yum!

Next thing on the checklist – what to drink? We suggest picking up a few bottles of your favourite wine, perhaps some cold beer if that’s more your thing or why not pretend that you are in Brazil and whip up a Caipirinha. Saúde!

Hold on to your hats folks, things are about to get festive!

The first game kicks off at 10pm tonight our time. To have a look at the complete game schedule, click here.

With love and toe bounces,

Tess
