Top sommelier shares 2 summer wines for every occasion

Looking for crisp wine that doesn’t break the bank but hits the spot every time? We asked multi-award-winning sommelier and wine judge Joseph Dhafana for his top two wines for the “every” occasion summer-drinking enjoyment.

If you’re a “savvy B” lover, opt for Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc 2020 from Durbanville. It’s clear and clean on the nose with hints of tropical notes such as guava, asparagus, figs and passion fruit. It’s quite dry with a refreshing acidity to it. On the palate, it’s slightly complex, balanced with ripe fruit purity and a lingering aftertaste. It goes down a treat and you can enjoy as is or alongside your favourite summer salad, chicken dish or festive cheese board.

If chenin is your preferred weapon of choice, grab some Kloof Street Chenin Blanc 2020 from Swartland. This wine has a nose of sun-ripened pears and wet granite. The palate has a vibrant acidity balanced by a soft, round texture and pith character. It is fresh and mineral with visible stone fruit on the palate. Perfect for everyday drinking enjoyment! It pairs well with light seafood dishes, summer salads with fresh stone fruit, sushi or even avo toast.

As long as you keep these two white wines cold, opportunities for their enjoyment are neverending, just as any wine situation should be!
