The dreaded V-day

You might say that with Tequila Tuesday, Hump Wednesday and Phuza Thursday in the mix, who needs Valentine’s Day? There’s certainly no shortage of excuses to get out there and have a good time with your mates, or with your mate. But let’s be honest people – when last did you get a hump on Hump Day anyway? Psssssssssssssh.

I know that at least half of you reading this hate the dreaded V-Day with all of your big red commercialised hearts and you would rather die than send a cheesy card to your beloved or, in my case, your passing fancy.  Come on though, who doesn’t like a declaration of love over a wonderfully romantic meal at a gorgeous restaurant with a bottle of your favourite bubbly? That doesn’t sound so scary now does it?

So this year don’t let the little red army of teddy bears with beady-hearted-eyes put you off showing the love of your life a good time on February 14. Just casually book a table for two at a beautiful restaurant and enjoy each other’s company, and I promise you Cupid will be satisfied with that.

Some of my top tips for Capetonians would be the Grand Beach Café (but good luck getting a booking there), the newly revamped and undeniably romantic Café Paradiso or Brio 1893 for a bit of retro dinner and swing dancing. If you fancy a hot dish The Bombay Brasserie is a top choice and a trip to the winelands should include a night of fine dining at Tokara.

Gautengers… our intrepid arrow-dodging restaurant reviewer Baglett has rounded up her top 10 hot-spots for V-day and our blogger Janice Tripepi has asked around Durban and learned some interesting Valentine’s facts, plus a list of lovely restaurants for your consideration.

And if those don’t float your boat then check out our specials page – it’s absolutely chockers with Valentine’s Day deals.

Please email us your favourite romantic restaurants, or if you’re planning a night in with saucy recipes, send us those too.

Love and oysters and bubbly,
