“Where
you guys watching the game?”
I can’t believe there’s only one more time I can say that! I’m terrified that
when this month long party that has been the World Cup eventually ends that
I’ll be so bored (or, er, so-bered). What did we do before goals, red cards,
hand balls, penalty shoot-outs and fan walks?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve really spent A LOT of time with my friends…
and strangers… this past month, and I’ve loved bonding over goals and bad
refereeing – but now its back to facebook stalking and I’m sure a detox
is in order. Yawn.
And then when we start missing each other (I give myself 2 days) we’ll be
looking for lovely restaurants with good winter specials so that we can go out
and eat, drink and be merry again. So, at the end of this week we’ll be
taking down all our “World Cup”
restaurant specials and updating them with “Winter Specials”,
but before we do that we’d just like to say thanks for playing… to all those
restaurants who did us proud in 2010.
You guys pulled out all the stops.
For sure we’ve got restaurants to be perennially proud of, places like La Colombe
and Le Quartier
Français who win us awards and
accolades every year, and I so often see reviews from tourists who
have loved our restaurants so much they’ve waxed lyrical on Food24.
But what about those places who have just made this world cup ridiculously
awesome by coming to the party with fantastic specials and an awesome vibe?
Places like…. Miss K,
Bravado
and Doppio Zero,
right opposite the stadium, making sure that the fan walk got fed
(hotdogs, boerie rolls and beers) as well as being rama-lama-ding-dong inside
with pre-match partying people. Buena Vista’s
huge marquee, also across the road. Nitida,
for erecting a beer tent out in the winelands to accommodate fans appreciating
our fine wines. Myoga
for their top-class winter menu at
R150 for six courses. Moyo in
Jozi for upping their game and giving the tourists a great African
experience.
And of course to all the staff in those restaurants, thanks for all the double
shifts and blistered feet. Well done South Africa for hosting the best World
Cup ever and well done to our restaurants and bars for making it so special.
