Earlier this year, when Hellmann’s announced that their mayonnaise range would no longer be available in South Africa, the Food24 audience was understandably dismayed. After all, it’s a popular choice of mayo, with the Food24 team describing it as “rich and creamy” and “real and natural” in our mayonnaise Taste Test.
But now, Pick n Pay has good news for mayo fans: Hellmann’s mayonnaise is back on their shelves, due to popular demand.
Hellmann’s mayonnaise had been discontinued due to the high costs associated with making the American brand available in South Africa. But Pick n Pay felt that where there’s a will, there’s a way… and their customers dearly wanted the product back.
“When the local supplier delisted the product earlier this year, our customers were heartbroken. In keeping with our customer promise to deliver the products they want and need, we immediately started exploring other supply options around the world to get the product back on our shelves as quickly as possible,” said Calvin Watson, the head of department for edible groceries at Pick n Pay.
