It’s coffee month

We’ve gone bean-crazy at Food24 this month with lots of recipes, lots of promotions and recommendations and lots of lots of that miraculous, eye-opening, stimulating drink that is coffee.

I have to confess that actually, I don’t drink the stuff at all – I’ve only ever had 2 cups in my life, both times at job interviews when it was just poured as a matter of course. I wanted (and got) both jobs so I guess my sacrifice wasn’t in vain, but it was touch and go!

Nowadays, of course, the closest I come to coffee is that wine style beloved by the public and hated by the critics – the chocolate/coffee Pinotage.

Opinion is divided as to whether this style will encourage people into trying wine or whether it debases the whole drinks category – I’d be interested to know what you think. But either way, it’s popular and it’s growing – there’s going to be a separate Trophy for the category at the Michelangelo Awards this year – so I’ve given a few suggestions for you to try.

It’s strange to think how coffee has sneaked its way into our consciousness – even though I never drink the stuff, I often find myself arranging to ‘meet up for a coffee.’ We’ve got all the best places to do that coming up this month as well as the best place to buy your beans, barista tips and even some coffee art on our Facebook page.

And if you prefer to eat your coffee, then we’ve got recipes for cakes, truffles, chocolate mousse and some amazing rubs for meat as well.

As for me, I’ll stick to taking my caffeine in a cup of Five Roses and getting my fix of flavours from a glass of wine. It struck me as I was writing this that surely coffee Pinotage must the drink intended when people use the phrase ‘wide-eyed and legless’-  what other drink could combine the effects so effectively?!

So with that in mind, I shall say ‘Cheers’ and ‘Hic’ to coffee month at Food24. Hope you enjoy it, however you take it!
