How you can help the food shortage crisis in Durban

The most recent violent protests and looting that has destroyed and devastated most parts of Durban has resulted in a food shortage across the province. With many stores left without stock, little to no distribution trucks and warehouses left desolated, there is a dire shortage of food in the area. 

With many locals in Durban having to queue for hours to access basic necessities such as bread, milk, vegetables, children’s formula and more – we have created a list of resources and organisations to donate monetary funds, food items and other necessities. 

Hope SA

Local non-profit organisation HopeSA is currently running a donations drive dedicated to supplying food supplies to residents in Durban. The donations will be used towards purchasing food items and necessities in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The organisation will be travelling with these goods to Durban via charted aircraft.

Help Foundation SA

Non-governmental organisation Help Foundation SA is hosting a food collection drive in Johannesburg and is accepting flour, rice, sugar, tea bags, tin food, nappies and more. 

For security reasons details about the drop off points will only be provided when you send them a direct message via Instagram. 

 

Meals in a Box

South Africans outside of Durban can purchase meal boxes from Meals in a Box and the service will deliver them to those in need. The meals are ready-made items and for the latest on their current menu and pricing, please contact them directly.

Aryan Benevolent Home

Aryan Benevolent Home, a non-profit organisation in Durban that provides care and shelter to the elderly, victims of violence and abuse along with children in need is calling on donations.

Volvo Bloemfontein donation collection 

Automotive retailer and distributor Volvo in Bloemfontein has announced that they will be travelling to Durban to donate goods to those in need.

Volvo Bloemfontein is calling on individuals and other businesses to donate any non-perishable items such as long-life milk, baby formula, nappies, pet food, sanitary products, flour and more.

Gift of the Givers

The largest disaster response non-government organisation in Africa, Gift of the Givers is calling on the country to donate monetary funds towards their food drive.

Online South African skincare brand Hey Gorgeous has connected with delivery services; Bex, SA Harvest and Catalyze to deliver non-perishable food and supplies to Durban.
