Egg shortage on the rise – here’s why and what you can use instead

eggs

If you’ve noticed a shortage of eggs on shelves, you’re not imagining things. The H5 and H7 avian influenza strains broke out earlier this year and the impact is now being felt by egg suppliers across the country. Retailers have also warned that we can expect a shortage of poultry in the coming months too.

What is avian flu?

Avian flu is a type of virus that primarily infects birds. However, it can also infect humans when they come into contact with sick birds. Thereafter, it can be passed from human to human. Avian flu is a very serious illness, so it’s vital that we prevent the spread of it. This is why many poultry suppliers are now having to cull birds – and it could be a while for the industry to make up the shortage. The government is investigating whether new egg suppliers can be brought in from other countries.

What can you use instead of eggs?

While nothing beats a scrambled or fried egg in the morning, eggs are also a fundamental ingredient in many other dishes too. (Think quiches, pancakes and cakes, for example.) But there are alternatives you can use, from mashed banana to flax seeds. Find out more about these egg alternatives here.
