Celebrating Women’s Day

How many people in your circle of friends actually understand why we have Women’s Day?

The public holiday that we celebrate on 9 August started in 1994 and commemorates the protest that took place in Pretoria 58 years ago when more than 50 000 women marched to the Union Buildings to remonstrate the pass laws. In 1956, that took some guts!

These were women from all walks of life – mothers, wives, sisters, friends – who, I imagine would have been up early that morning, making sure that their families’ tummies were all full before setting off to fight for their rights.

Fast-forward to 2014. The world is a very different place today where women and men in most countries are able to enjoy many of the same rights, resources and opportunities, so it really grates my cheese when I see articles in food magazines or online entitled, ‘Man food’ – featuring thick cut steaks, burgers, ribs, carb-heavy bowls of pasta and a smattering of braai recipes.

It annoys me because I know loads of girls and in particular, women in my family – who know how to braai like champions! (and who eat all the food I mentioned above).

So, I’m challenging you this weekend do ditch the stereotype. Let’s whip out the biggest, ‘baddest’ knives that we own. Feel like meatballs in tomato sauce? Go for it. Bacon chilli poppers? Be my guest! T-bone steak with mustard sauce? Now, we getting serious.

Pop open a chilled beer or mix your favourite cocktail and be grateful for all those strong, courageous women who would not silenced by unjust laws. We salute you!
