Carb Wars of 2014

Ah December… Chapter 12 of 12. The month of Boney M, festive drinks, trees being delivered and decorated; and all manner of festive food treats being prepared.

Before we go off to our families to celebrate Christmas, we generally spend the first half of December celebrating another year ending with our fellow survivors. We put aside our achievements, and our disappointments, and we gather at The Fireman’s Arms with pizzas and Stella Artois (well that’s our tradition anyway), and we remember the times we’ve laughed the hardest.

At Food24, 2014 will be remembered as the year of the Carb Wars.

Whether you’ve tried the LCHF (Banting) diet or not, this year definitely kicked off with a buzz around the low carb diet –  and it has not gone away. The most read article for this year on Food24 was the Top 20 recipes for a Low Carb High Fat diet. We even ran a Banting survey that generated some interesting results.

All we can say is… long may the questions last around what we are eating, and where it comes from.

Carb Enemy Number 1: Desserts! Not even Tim Noakes and the Banting Army could stop people from visiting this decadent hub. It’s our pride and joy and is full of the most unbelievable and original recipes to round off any dinner party!

Another one for the Carb Team and another top-read article of the year was 10 sandwiches that will make you rethink giving up carbs. Boom.

One for both teams though has to be our absolutely gorgeous braai hub – full of braailicious recipes – which has also broken all sorts of records this year – you can have a braai with almost anything!

There was more to 2014 than carbs though, and Cathy Marston, our wine editor, has even made a list of her top 10 wines for 2014. We urge you to try at least one of them this year!

In the year of craft cocktails we also heard that the world’s biggest and best bartending competition, The Diageo Reserve World Class Global Finals, will be coming to Cape Town in 2015 – and that is surely something for us to celebrate! Watch this space next year people; it’s going to be big.

And what would the year be without the most prestigious foodie announcement of all. Yes, the EatOut Top 10 restaurants of the year. A big congrats to one of our favourite chefs, Luke Dale-Roberts, and his team at The Test Kitchen.

There’s so much more to remember about 2014 like chouxnuts and Jamie Oliver’s milk tart, but we are almost ready to call it a year and look forward to another crazy one full of marvelously mouth-watering recipes.

Bring it on! But first, pizza.
