6 wines to knock your mom’s socks off this Mother’s Day

Yes – I know we should spoil our mothers all year round, but it’s nice to make a special effort just one day of the year. If you’re still looking for something to give to the special mom in your life – here are a few suggestions which have come my way recently.

De Krans Moscato Perlé 2015 R49

‘Sweets for my sweet, sugar for my Mommy’ – if that’s your thinking on Mother’s Day, then this is the perfect choice. Moscato is the hottest wine style travelling the world at the moment and with its low alcohol, refreshing sweetness balanced by clean acidity, flavours of rose petals and litchis, plus its prickle of tiny bubbles… this wine is a winner on so many levels. It’s perfect with dessert and if you’re giving your Mom chocolates this Sunday, then slip in a bottle of this as well – she’ll love it!

Neethlingshof Six Flowers White Blend 2014 R95

What do we traditionally give our Moms on Mother’s Day? Flowers of course. Here are 6 of them in one bottle. This wine is a tribute to a past owner of Neethlingshof, Maria Marais, who took over the estate after the untimely death of her husband. She placed 6 flowers – 1 for each of her 5 children and 1 for her – in the gables of the Manor House and this wine commemorates her with its 6 varieties. Mainly Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, there are also some aromatic tweaks which lift and delight. Sensitively-oaked and with a rich yet fresh mouthfeel, I’d go for a homely roast chicken as the ideal food partner of choice.

La Motte Chardonnay 2013 R110

This arrived just before La Motte also sent me a beautiful bag of gorgeous creams, potions and lotions so I thought I would enjoy them all together and would drink this Chardonnay in the bath. I can highly recommend this combination as I floated away on a cloud of well-being, enjoying the beautifully balanced oak (a portion was made in stainless steel for added freshness) and the creamy lemon freshness of the fruit. Naughty but oh so very, very nice…

Groote Post Old Man’s Blend Red 2014 R68

Cos she didn’t get to be your mom without your dad! Groote Post have created some special neck labels for this range for Father’s Day but I don’t see why you can’t enjoy this wine a little earlier. In fact, I’d enjoy it any time – one of my favourite everyday drinking reds, this soft and juicy blend of Merlot, Cab and Shiraz is a staple in my house, likes everything I cook and always keeps me warm on cold nights. Just like a good dad should!

Bosman Family Wines Adama Red 2013 R110

This Mediterranean Blend is made by one of my favourite Wine Moms and Food24 blogger – Corlea Fourie from Bosman Wines. I hope she gets to put her feet up and be pampered by husband Bertus and her kids and I’m sure she’ll be happy if they serve her this, one of her own special favourites. It’s a spicy, fruity, chewy, dense yet elegant wine, packed with dark berries with hints of chocolate which will be a great partner for a classic roast or an easy family braai

Glenelly The Lady May 2011 R290

This wine commemorates another strong woman, this time Madame May de Lencquesaing, former owner of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux and who set up Glenelly just over a decade ago. It’s mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with just a tweak of Petit Verdot and the past four years have melded these strong flavours into something rich and satisfying yet elegant and somehow noble. Being a mom takes strength and courage, so reward yours with a bottle of wine which simply says it all!
