On the first Friday of each month, Harveys at the Winchester Mansions pairs three of the finest things in life – food, wine and art – at their 3G evening.
3G stands for Grapes, Gourmet, Gallery which is obviously the wine, food and art (in that order).
Food24 was invited to experience their March 3G evening where a five-course meal, by sous Chef Justin May and his team, was paired with 5 of the lovely De Waal Wines.
The evening kicked off with an art exhibition of breathtaking prints (of original copies) of the City Bowl by Lucie de Moyencourt. While sipping on a glass of Chenin Blanc 2016 guests had the opportunity to browse through Lucie’s collection while she went around engaging with everyone.
The food for the evening was described by the chef as “simple food with a twist” and he explained that they try not to “change the molecular structure” too much.
Owner of De Waal Wines, Pieter De Waal, treated guests to a bit of the rich history of the Cape Wines and right throughout the night he explained each specific wine pairing together with the food and beverage manager who MC’d.
The first (and my favourite) course was a dish of seared salmon with a chive, lime, citrus mascarpone parfait. This was beautifully paired with a Sauvignon Blanc 2016 which had fruity guava and fig notes. The pairing worked superbly as the wine brought the fish dish alive.
Next up was a spicy Cape Malay kingklip with a crunchy carrot and mange tout slaw, paired with a light Young Vines Merlot. Other dishes included a lazy aged beef fillet, a very peppery crusted springbok with carrot, spring onion and garlic potatoes and last but not least a lovely Turkish delight parfait.
3G evenings are a monthly occurrence at the Winchester Mansions and will cost you R 425.00 per person. Each month will feature a different wine and artist on exhibit. For bookings and more information click here.
