Where to find the most mouthwatering pastries in Joburg

Cake is great – but when it comes to a real spoil, only a pastry will do. It’s not just because all those layers of buttery, flaky pastry, dollops of delicately flavoured crème and rich ganache are so mouth-wateringly delicious; it’s also because each pretty morsel is a work of art.

Here’s where to get your fix:

Patisserie de Paris
When a boulangerie is recognised for making the best baguette in Joburg, you know it has perfected the art of French baking. This Parisienne-style establishment gets our thumbs up not only because of its tempting pastries and desserts, but also because of the little extras that make it as warm and welcoming as it is chic – like the water bowl thoughtfully provided for your furry lunch date.

The Patisserie

One of the grande dames of Joburg’s coffee culture, Patisserie was one of the first establishments to bring French café-style flair to our city with its signature pink, black and white decor. Its dainty petit fours have earned a cult following – understandably so, for who can resist a perfectly pastel accompaniment to a frothy cappuccino?

Patachou Patisserie
You’d be forgiven for imagining you’re on the Champs Elysee when you walk into this beautiful boutique shop in Rivonia. Each delicacy is a mini-masterpiece: think of melting macaroons in rainbow colours, light-as-air sponge wrapped in chocolate to create an opera that makes music in your mouth or that French classic, a tarte au pommes.

Café de la Crème

Melville seems to fall in and out (and back in) fashion, but through it all this delightfully old-fashioned bakery and tea room remains a firm favourite. That’s probably because there are few places in Joburg to rival Café de la Crème’s famous bee sting cakes and palmieres.

Dolci Café
Chef Jackie Righi-Boyd’s special occasion cakes show true artistry, but if you’re in the mood for something a little simpler – chocolate bigne, for example, or a cream horn – this is the place to indulge.

Café Patisse

Chef Martin Ferreira is most famous for his eclairs. No ordinary confections these; instead, each is carefully crafted so that no two look the same. You’ll also find a range of old favourites, like mill-feuilles and a selection of favourite cakes.

Belle’s Patisserie

It’s good to know that Belle’s offers a skinny menu – but when you see the patisserie’s pretty range of pastries, you’ll forget all about watching calories. Our favourite? The pear and almond tart or the tart (as in sour), kiss of a lemon meringue pie.

JHB Culinary and Pastry School

Joburg’s market regulars are enchanted by the concoctions whisked up by this talented team: their picture perfect pastries are a sheer joy to look at. They’re also a joy to eat, would you be able to say no to a triple chocolate brownie?
