It’s mid-January which means that, right now, you may be counting the minutes until Pay Day. If you need your daily caffeine fix, and prefer a good-quality brew, you might be facing a dilemma: will you have enough moolah to buy yourself a good cup of coffee until the end of the month arrives?

If you live in the Mother City, this article is for you. Food24 spent an afternoon in Cape Town’s Bree Street and is happy to report that it is indeed possible to find fabulous coffee at a pocket-friendly price.

Ranked from most affordable to least affordable, here’s how Bree Street’s cafés and coffee shops fair (to keep things simple, we based our ranking on the price of a regular Americano).

1. Häzz
Painted bright blue, and perched between a row of fabulous eateries and designer shops at the top of Bree, this coffee shop offers the most economical cuppa in town. The bonus? The coffee is truly superb.
Price of an Americano: R17

2. Folk café
Right at the other end of Bree Street, close to the CTICC, you’ll find another very reasonable cup of coffee. Plus, this little café oozes charm – perfect for a quiet moment before the work day starts.
Price of an Americano: R18

3. SMAK Deli
Head over to this trendy patisserie and delicatessen for lunch and a good-value-for-money coffee. Every item on the menu is made to order.
Price of an Americano: R18

4. God’s Army
Situated next to Barnet Fair in the St Stevens Building, this bookstore and coffee shop is a great place to shop for Christian literature while getting your caffeine fix.
Price of an Americano: R18

5. Revolution Cycles
On the hunt for specialised cycling gear? Make Revolution Cycles your one-stop shop. What you save on coffee, you can spend on those accessories you’ve been ogling…
Price of an Americano: R20

6. Culture Club Cheese
While good-quality cheese should be your priority when you visit this delightful establishment at the top of Bree Street, you’ll be happy to know that their Americanos won’t set you back too much.
Price of an Americano: R22

7. Bacon on Bree
Hungry? Then the “baconporium” hits the spot. Enjoy lovely organic produce while sipping on a decent, fairly well-priced cup of coffee.
Price of an Americano: R22

8. Café Frank
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city by retreating into a quiet corner of this hipster hangout. While the coffee is slightly more expensive than at most of Frank’s neighbours, the food is fantastic.
Price of an Americano: R23

9. Jason Bakery
This legendary bakery hardly needs an intro. If you tend to go potty for pastry, look no further – and enjoy a good, strong cup of coffee while you’re at it.
Price of an Americano: R23

10. The General Store
This must be the fairest coffee spot of them all, and one of our personal favourites. Their coffee is, however, on the more expensive side…
Price of an Americano: R23

11. Nitro House
For something different, head over to Nitro House, where the coffee is prepared with nitrogen. Choose between vanilla, chocolate and original – even if it means paying an extra Rand or two.
Price of an Americano: R23

12. Dapper
If you can afford a luxury sports car, chances are that you’re not splitting hairs about the price of a hot beverage. So, pay a visit to Club9 to get your wheels polished and enjoy the java – even if it sets you back R26 a pop.
Price of an Americano: R26

*Note that prices are, of course, subject to change.
