If you’ve watched our fun quick-fire food video with Scarra Ntubeni, you’ll know that he’s a real foodie. But what does he eat when he’s in serious training mode? We quiz him about his day-to-day diet and see if he has any cheat meals…

You’re training hard now in pre-season. What does your average day of eating look like?

“This time of the season until February, I’m doing a lot of mileage and training very hard – lots of running and gymming, so I have a lot more carbs,  especially early in the morning.  I often have oats in the morning. I always try and eat clean but I don’t always get it right. When we’re in season and playing I try to eat fewer carbs and more lean protein.”

So what are your eating times like then?

“I generally eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and then have a snack in between like some tuna or a small salad or chicken breasts with broccoli. I’m really not the best when it comes to prepping but I do try. At Western Province, we’re sponsored by Evox and there’s a whole storeroom where you can go and get fat burners and Creatine and amino boosters. So whatever you feel you need, they have it for us”.

What’s your favourite healthy meal?

“I love my salmon. It’s clean and I have it chopped in a bowl with a bit of mayo and salad like baby tomatoes, onions, lettuce and all of that stuff.”

Your go-to cheat meal?

“I shouldn’t say this but it’s BoxMaster at KFC. It doesn’t happen too much though”.
