We tested three “bubble” chocolates and crowned a favourite

With chocolate an all-round favourite, we decided to level it up and taste test aerated chocolate. Aerated chocolate can be understood as a process of adding gas bubbles when creating chocolate, resulting in light, melt-in-your-mouth, chocolatey goodness.

We rated the three aerated chocolate samples on an array of criteria, including sweetness, “bubbliness” and taste.

Here are the results!

Cadbury Dairy Milk Bubbly milk chocolate
Price: R21.99

Although this chocolate has the title of “bubbly” in the name, it lost points in this area with tasters commenting “it’s a pity that the texture didn’t feature many ‘bubbles’” and “could use a bit more ‘bubbliness’ where the bubbles dissolve in your mouth almost instantly”.

The chocolate scored high in taste with many tasters reporting they would eat it again.

Bubbliness: 60 /100
Sweetness:  75/100
Taste:  80 / 100

Nestle Aero Dark
Price: R20.99

This chocolate did not miss the mark on the level of bubbliness as tasters were in overall agreement with some commenting “This chocolate definitely lived up to the ‘bubbly’ factor in texture”.

In comparison to the other two samples, this dark chocolate did not track well when it comes to taste as the dark chocolate flavour was labelled as “overpowering”. For those looking for a not-too-sweet aerated chocolate, this may be the ideal option.

Bubbliness:  80 /100
Sweetness:  67.5 /100
Taste:  50 / 100

Canderel Magic Bubble Milk Chocolate
Price: R43.99

Made with artificial sweeteners, this chocolate received varying feedback from the tasters with comments ranging from “the taste and flavour were rather underwhelming” to “it had quite a nice malty flavour to it, reminded me of milo – delish!”

In terms of bubbliness, it received an average score and did not have an aerated taste.

Bubbliness: 50.5 /100
Sweetness:   60 /100
Taste:   50.5 / 100

Our winner of this taste test is the Aero Dark as it scored the highest in overall “bubbliness”.
