Disney Pixar released a teaser trailer this week, announcing the much-anticipated release of Toy Story 4 sometime in mid-2019. Millennial adults who remember the very first Toy Story back in 1995, are taking to Twitter to express their excitement at the reunion of Woody, Buzz, Mr Potato Head and Jessie.

The trailer gave us an exciting glimpse of a new character, a craft project turned toy called Forky. He screeches out, “I don’t belong here!” as the other toys are thrown into disarray. He laments, “I’m not a toy…”

The plastic spork (half spoon half fork) has googly eyes and pipe cleaner arms and is definitely not cut from the same cloth as the other toys. A spork with an identity crisis? This is exactly what we were looking for in a foodie hero – a toy that is not quite toy, torn between two worlds, a mishmash of function and art. Twitter was ready to respond:

In a Disney press release this week, director Josh Cooley gives us some more context on Forky’s origin. “The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose,” said Cooley. “A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfil his purpose as a spork but now has a new toy purpose thrust upon him” We can so relate.
