The world’s number one trending coffee drink is here: What you need to know about the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte

Every September, coffee fans all across the world eagerly await the release of a limited edition drink from the world’s largest coffee chain. That’s the pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, which will be available from 5 September to 5 November at locations across South Africa.

The pumpkin spice latte, known by enthusiasts as PSL, is a cultural phenomenon across social media, stirring up strong emotions – most people either love it or hate it. And because September definitely isn’t the beginning of autumn for those of us in the southern hemisphere, the pumpkin spice latte is also available in an iced coffee version.

What is a pumpkin-spiced latte, anyway?

Espresso and steamed milk are combined with a blend of pumpkin and traditional spice flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger. This is all topped off with whipped cream and some more spice.

To a South African palate, the flavours of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg are more reminiscent of “Christmas spices” – the combination most of us would recognise in mince pies or perhaps hot cross buns. If you’re a fan of these treats, then the PSL is definitely for you!

Adrian Maizey, owner and CEO of Rand Capital Coffee, the custodian of Starbucks in Southern Africa, says, “Starbucks fans have been anticipating this signature seasonal beverage since last year, and we are proud that this year South Africans will once again be able to join the fashionistas in their quest to be at the forefront of taste trends. We look forward to South Africa’s (social media) posts that we know will echo the annual global thrill at the return of PSL onto Starbucks menus.”

Earlier this month, Eat Out reported that Starbucks is coming to Cape Town, with a new store opening in November 2020. Located in Canal Walk mall, the store is sure to become a destination for coffee-lovers and trend-seekers alike.
