If you’re looking for the perfect poolside tipple or for a fancier-than-usual wine to impress your guests over the festive season, the 2024 edition of the Platter’s by Diners Club wine guide is your go-to. This year, the guide features over 900 producers, merchants and brands, of which 31 are brand new. Over 8,000 locally produced wines, brandies, husk spirits and sherry-style wines are also included.

South Africa’s wine regions are lauded worldwide and, with so many wineries to visit, it can be hard to select just a few to visit this summer. Luckily, Platter’s wine guide includes extensive information on the various attractions and activities on offer at the wine farms. In addition, the guide also provides notes on regions, grape varieties, wine-tasting terms and awards, as well as spotlighting those wines that are considered good value for money.

This year, 226 wines were awarded the coveted five stars (indicating “Superlative. A South African classic”), with the most being awarded to chenin blanc (32), followed by chardonnay (25), and cabernet sauvignon and syrah (with 14 each).

The Top Performing Winery of the Year went to Sadie Family Wines, Bosman Family Vineyards won the Editor’s Award Winery of the Year, and the Newcomer Winery of the Year was awarded to Edouard Labeye.

Platter’s 2024 hardcover will be available from selected bookstores and retailers nationwide from early December 2023.

A subscription to the web-based version, as well as the apps for Apple and Android devices, is available from www.wineonaplatter.com/products or the app stores. (A single subscription unlocks all digital versions.)
