Boy oh boy
– am I LOVING the Rugby World Cup! Sky News has been abandoned at the gym in
the mornings in favour of tussles between Canada and Tonga, Ireland and America
(did you see their last minute try? You’d think they’d won the entire
tournament!) all of which is doing wonders for my figure. And frankly, that’s
just as well, because what with all the sports-wines around at the moment, I’m
struggling!
Rugby winemakers
I suppose
it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that rugby and wine have such a close affinity
– there are many wine farmers out there who are definitely built to take on the
likes of Jonah Lomu and win. Rugby legends such as Hempies du Toit at Annandale and Jan ‘Boland’ Coetzee of Vriesenhof both came from winemaking
families, which it made sense for them to rejoin after their days on the field
were over. And when Schalk Burger has had enough, Welbedacht Farm in Wellington awaits his golden touch.
Rugby Wines – from a golfer?!
So there is
plenty of choice when it comes to rugby-playing winemakers, which makes it all
the more surprising that it is Ernie Els
who has ended up getting the rights to make the Rugby World Cup wines! What next I wonder – Retief Goosen of The Goose Wines making a Wimbledon White
or Ryk Neethling at Val de Vie
producing a Monaco Grand Prix Merlot? The possibilities are endless.
