Restaurants – employ a food stylist and break Instagram

Food + Instagram = a winning combination. Although it’s often frowned upon, it’s also used for raising funds and saving lives.

Now, more than ever, it’s hard not to snap a picture of your lunch because at The Grounds of Alexandria in Sydney, any meal you order will arrive begging to be photographed.

The owners of this Instagram-worthy Australian café hired a full-time food stylist to ensure all orders served are visually appealing. Every drink is decorously du jour, each pastry is photo-ready, breakfasts are beautiful and salads are chic and sumptuous.

Social media hype

This results in a drool-worthy Facebook and Twitter feeds. They have over 50,000 followers on Instagram and they hold the title of sixth most Instagrammed place in Australia in 2014, coming in just behind stunning beaches and the Sydney Opera House.

Management claims they are not deliberately encouraging diners to post on social media, but they acknowledge that it’s a system designed to spark conversation.

Some will argue that food photos ruin the enjoyment of eating in the same way that photographing a performance might distract you from enjoying the actual performance. However, often, life is just as peachy when enjoyed through a lens for a minute, with the bonus of being captured and emblazoned on social media indefinitely.

What do you think? Good business move or begging for attention?

We think there are plenty food stylists in South Africa who could bring the same kind of attention to SA restaurants.
