Pancake cereal: The fun-sized internet trend making a big deal

Quarantine food trends seem to move as quickly as time itself and it’s very important to stay on trend whilst cosying up at home on the couch! From frothy Dalgona coffees and freshly baked banana bread to sourdough starters and floral bread, we’ve seen it all – or so we thought.

There’s a new global quarantine food trend making a big splash despite its miniature proportions. And yes, we’re talking about pancake cereal! Though we’d technically call it flapjack cereal here, pancake cereal comprises dozens of the tiniest version of the breakfast treat eaten like cereal instead of stacked.

Want to make your own? You’ll need a basic pancake batter (make sure it’s nice and thick), a plastic squeezable bottle (this is essential!) and a good non-stick pan. It does take heat-resistant fingers, patience and a little finesse, but it’s fairly simple – we promise you’ll soon be turning out pancake cereal like a pro!

Enjoy drenched in honey or topped with everything from milk soaked with crushed Oreos, funfetti or leftover Easter eggs. You could also go old-school and smother it in maple syrup – because what are flapjacks if not a vehicle for as much maple syrup as possible?

Go on and conquer #pancakecereal, at least until the next quarantine food trend. Together we’ll get through this period of lockdown snack-down – don’t forget to share and tag @food24_sa, or use #bakewithfood24 in all your baking adventures. Keep safe and happy baking!
